INSTRUCTIONS
(1) Assume appropriate data and state your reasons
(2) Marks are given to the right of every question
(3) Draw neat diagrams wherever necessary

Attempt any four
1 (a) Explain the logic behind effluent and stream standards.
5 M
1 (b) Write a note on Environmental Audit Report.
5 M
1 (c) Explain the effect of following constituents on the stream.
1) Inorganic dissolved solids.
2) Suspended solids.
5 M
1 (d) Explain alkaline chlorination used to treat chromium waste.
5 M
1 (e) Explain oxygen sag curve.
5 M

2 (a) Give the process of alcohol generation. What are the characteristics of the waste water from alcohol industry? What are the byproducts from this industry?
10 M
2 (b) Draw and explain flow sheets for the treatment of effluent for disposal into
i) Public sewer
ii) Inland surface water from Dairy Industry.
10 M

3 (a) Explain with a neat flow diagram the method of manufacturing of sugar. Give the characteristics of waste water and different by products of sugar industries.
10 M
3 (b) List out of the modifications of the conventional aerobic biological treatment methods and explain any three.
10 M

4 (a) What is Environmental Impact Assessment? Why EIA is done? Explain the same in the following context-
i) Screening
ii) Scoping
iii) Prediction
iv) Reporting.
10 M
4 (b) State the importance to treat industrial waste. Explain in detail strength and volume reduction of industrial waste.
10 M

5 (a) A city discharge 1600 lit/sec of sewage into a stream whose minimum rate of flow is 6000 lit/sec. The temperature of sewage as well as water is 20°C. The 5 day BOD at 20°C for Sewage is 200 mg/lit and that of river water is 1 mg/lit. The DO content of sewage is zero and that of the stream is 90% of the saturation DO. If the minimum DO to be maintained in the stream is 4.5 mg/lit, find out degree of sewage treatment required. Assume the de-oxygenation coefficient as 0.1 and re-oxygenation coefficient as 0.3,
12 M
5 (b) Explain with neat flow diagram a working of a CETP. What are the situations in which it is used?
8 M

6 (a) Explain with the help of flow sheet the manufacturing process of cotton textile.
10 M
6 (b) Explain various methods of neutralization of acidic wastes. What are the effects of acidic wastes in general?
