Dayanand Sagar College of Dental Sciences, Kumaraswamy Layout

Location:

Dayanand Sagar College of Dental Sciences is in South-Central Bangalore’s Kumaraswamy Layout close to Banashankari. Bus services provided by BMTC are fantastic in the central areas of Bangalore and this college is one amongst many other institutions which benefit by this awesome service. However, few students here are known to make use of BMTC buses as half of them reside in the hostels and the others commute by their own two wheelers.

Infrastructure:

The college is part of the gargantuan Dayanand Sagar Institutions (DSI) campus which spreads of acres of land and is home to several other sister institutes. As you enter the campus on your bike, you are directed to the parking lot which is humungous with hundreds of bikes parked every day (Parking is charged at Rs. 5/- every day and doesn’t go down well with everyone). Infrastructure on the whole is terrific; buildings, libraries, classrooms, labs, Wi-Fi, e-books, everything.

The DSI campus has two kinds of hostels; the “NRI” hostel which isn’t restricted to only NRIs but is offered to anyone who can afford it. So if you want all the luxuries of a twin-sharing air-conditioned room equipped with a television and some more additional facilities, get ready to shell out at least double of what those chaps at the “Indian” hostel pay. Yes, that’s what they call it, an almost dilapidated hostel offering four-sharing, non-A/C, non-TV rooms at half the price (Rs. 60,000/- per year)

Fees:

For Karnataka CET students: Rs. 32,000/-
For UGET (COMEDK) students: Rs. 2.5L per year

Faculty:

From a few fabulous teachers to some really horrible ones, you’ll have to deal with every kind of teacher in the four or five years you spend here. Overall, the faculty can be said to a notch above average.

Attendance & Discipline:

DSCE is pretty lenient when it comes to attendance issues, at least compared to many other institutions in Bangalore. Although 85% is recommended and 75% is officially allowed if necessary medical documents are available, even below 75% is manageable, but only if you are ready to shell out fines, and heavy ones. Detention is rare and happens only in extreme cases.

The DSI group doesn’t believe in unnecessarily burdening the students with disciplinary rules and thus there’s complete freedom. A good belief, but is sometimes used by students in the wrong way.

Crowd:

Perhaps the best part of the entire Dayanand Sagar Institutions (DSI) campus. A very colorful crowd with girls outnumbering boys by a ratio which would make all guys feel awesome. Loads of North Indians somehow happen to land up here. There’s always an enthusiastic ambience around in the campus, girls and guys happen to blend perfectly and ‘masti’ is at the top of everyone’s mind.

Canteen:

Altogether 4 or 5 canteens lay spread out around the campus. The NRI canteen is perhaps the biggest, most hygienic appearing and costliest one amongst all. But it serves great food. Besides that, there’s an Indian canteen which mostly serves South-Indian snacks and one or two Nescafe-like stalls. Food is generally not an issue nor is the variety of food.

Hangouts:

You’ll find few places real close to the college but within 10-15 minute driving distance there’s every food, drinks & movie place you can think of. And with enough relaxation in attendance allowed, hanging out for big spans of time is what you won’t be able to escape while at Dayanand Sagar College of Dental Sciences.

Hospitals Affiliated:

Now that’s where Dayanand Sagar College of Dental Sciences takes a hitting. The parent hospital has been adorned with such great infrastructural facilities that half the patients are already prejudiced about having to shell out more money compared to other Dental Hospitals. Thus, although the charges are only scarcely above the usual rates, there’s not much patient inflow. To get the students some additional patient exposure, the college posts them at Sevashram General Hospital in JP Nagar for a few days, but the students feel that it’s still not enough.

Verdict:

Academically it’s generally the least preferred amongst Dental Colleges in Bangalore and perhaps even rightly so. But if you consider college LIFE, it’s pretty decent here.
