Indian Institute of Management - Calcutta (IIM-C)

Location & Infra:

The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) is built over a sprawling 135 acre campus in Joka, which is some distance away from mainland Kolkata. The magnificent campus not only has excellent infrastructure, but a lot of scenic beauty for nature lovers as well. There are five lakes and a mini Howrah bridge within the campus, and very often you come across exotic birds.

Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) has an extremely well equipped library, and it has good facilities for students who are interested in sports as well. There are four hostels which provide single-occupancy accommodation for all students. Each hostel has its own coffee shop, canteen and photocopiers. The campus is fully WiFi enabled.

Fees & Placements:

IIMs charge rather higher fees for a couple of reasons. One, because they provide value for your money in terms of quality of education. Two, because your packages after you graduate from a top IIM will make the fees look like pocket change on hindsight. Fees for the 2012-14 batch was Rs. 13.56 Lakh

Placements at IIM Calcutta are, in a word, fantastic. Some of the top consultancy, marketing and finance firms pick up students for astonishing salaries.

Some of the highlights of the 2012 placement season were:

Finance profiles accounted for 29% of all the jobs offered, followed by consulting at 27%.
Major recruiters were McKinsey, ICICI, UBS, Morgan Stanley, HSBC, Goldman Sachs, and a host of other big players.
More than 50 companies such as Barclays Bank, Google and Olam International offered lateral placements to experienced students.
There were a host of international offers with amazing packages, from some of the most reputed consultancy firms in the world.
Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) recorded the highest number of Investment Banking offers among all IIMs.
The highest package is normally undisclosed, but is believed to be in the range of a whooping Rs.70 lakhs.

Faculty & Pedagogy:

You can get an idea about the quality of faculty at IIM Calcutta by the simple fact that one of the professors rejected the post of RBI Governor to teach here. Most of the professors have at least a healthy 20 years of teaching experience, and have taught at Ivy League colleges. In short, the faculty is world-class, nothing less.

The structure of the course is very well designed so as to make learning a pleasure. Students are treated as equals by professors, and encouraged to actively participate during lectures. There are a number of case-studies that students are involved in throughout the course.

Crowd & Campus Life:

A unique feature about IIM Calcutta, according to the students, is that each and every person retains (and enhances) his or her personality. Professors treat students as their equals, and this fosters a great spirit out of which overall development is guaranteed.

Another lesser-known fact about IIMC is that they do not lay a lot of emphasis on past academics of students during their admission process. This means that you wouldn’t find nerds who have spent their lives cramming from books, but students who are all-rounders.

The lifeline of the IIMC community is undoubtedly JBS BaroC, one of the oldest college bands in the country. There are a number of other committees and clubs which help students interact with each other on a non-academic level.

Corporate Connections:

IIM Calcutta has tie-ups with and affiliations to a number of top-grade institutes, such as UCLA, Nation University of Singapore, Asian Institute of Management, and European Business School.

Summer Placements:

The summer placement time at IIMC is one of the most important in a student’s life, as this time will potentially decide where you end up ten years from now. Some of the biggest names in consultancy, finance and marketing visit the campus for their summer placements, and often give students fantastic pre-placement offers if their internships were fruitful.

In 2010, all 353 students got summer internship offers from a total of 125 recruiters. A record 75 students got international internships in finance hubs like New York, London, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Finance profiles led the offers at 37% of the total offers, and there were offers for marketing profiles as well. Royal Bank of Scotland was the largest recruiter, and some out of the many big names to visit the campus were UBS, Barclays Capital, Goldman Sachs, Nomura, Credit Suisse, HSBC and Morgan Stanley.

Special Attributes:

IIM Calcutta is the first IIM in the country, and is widely considered to be the best in the country for finance. Although it is probably just gossip, since there isn’t much evidence supporting it, people say that IIMC has leapfrogged IIMA and IIMB in the recruiters’ books.
