Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET)
General Description:
The IITs conduct their own entrance exams for admission to their institutes of management. If you aren’t an engineer, though, there’s no point reading further. Only engineers (or to-be-engineers) are eligible for this highly competitive exam.
Currently, IITs Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Roorkie, Kanpur and Kharagpur offer these degree courses in management.
Accepting Institutes:
IMPORTANT NOTE: The management schools of all IITs used to conduct the JMET and accept only JMET scores for their admissions, but it appears that from 2011 onwards the JMET is going to scrapped and these schools will be accepting CAT scores instead. Nevertheless, here's the list of schools that previously used to (and in future might) accept JMET scores:
- IISc Bangalore Department of Management Studies
- IIT Bombay Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management
- IIT Delhi Department of Management Studies
- IIT Kanpur Department of Industrial & Management Engineering
- IIT Kharagpur Vinod Gupta School of Management
- IIT Madras Department of Management Studies
- IIT Roorkee Department of Management Studies
Dates:
The JMET is normally conducted on the second Sunday of December every year. While applying, note that this would automatically mean that you’ll have to give the TISS exam a miss, unless you can be at two places at the same time.
Format and Peculiarities:
The JMET isn’t AS difficult as some people might make you believe. Yes, there is some amount of ‘higher math’ – differentiation and integration – but engineers should certainly not find it problematic. The format is tabulated quite nicely below:
|
|
Section |
No of Questions |
Time Allotted |
|
1 |
Verbal Communication |
30 |
120 minutes can be allotted by the student as per his discretion. |
|
2 |
Logical Reasoning |

3 |
Quantitative Ability |

|
|
4 |

Total |
120 |
120 minutes |
Tips:
Firstly, there aren’t too many questions on Higher Math, and even the few that are present are quite straightforward. So if you’ve been clearing your engineering exams once in a while, you should do just fine. Once the mental block is out of the way, the exam simply becomes a test of speed.
