All the faculties at IIITD&M are PhDs. There are visiting faculties from IIT-M for some of the electives. All the teachers are highly knowledgeable in their own field but some of them are not able to pass on that knowledge to students due to poor communication skills. Overall students are pretty much satisfied with their faculties.

IIITD&M Kancheepuram was started in a temporary campus of its mentor institute IIT Madras. New campus has been started and is fully functional but it is still under construction. Spread over 52 acres, new campus is massive but lots of land is not yet utilized. Also some equipment are missing in labs. But barring minor issues infrastructure is well up to the mark. In fact it is better than many lower rung Anna University colleges. Students expect that over time, it will boast of state of the art infrastructure which will be at par with, if not better than, all other IIITs.

IIITDM being a new college, placements are not as great as old IIITs. But they are much better compared to lower rung colleges under Anna University. Around 70% students take up jobs with average package of 4 LPA. The highest salary offered was 7.2 Lakh. Major recruiters are Ashok Leyland, Taegu Tec, Wills India, CTS, HCL etc. A prominent feature of placements here is that core companies come for all branches and students from non-IT branches also prefer core jobs rather than IT jobs.

It is considered as one of the IIITs and it is the only IIIT to be declared an institute of national importance (INI). Located off Vandalur-Kelambakkam road in Kancheepuram district & on the outskirts of Chennai city, IIITDM is near about 40 km away from central areas of city. It is a very isolated but peaceful location, away from all the hustle & bustle of city life, which can be perfect for studying. Surrounding area is sparsely populated compared to city but many residential complexes are being constructed in the vicinity. The campus is also slightly cooler compared to scorching hot Chennai.
To go to Chennai city from here, you need to take an MTC bus or rickshaw (which is rare in this area) till Tambaram, from where you can get plenty of buses to almost all parts of the city.

Separate hostels for boys and girls are there within the campus. Facilities like WiFi, ATM, general store, gym and playgrounds are provided. Rooms are nice but at times students feel congested living in them.

Majority of the crowd hails from various parts of south India. It's a nice crowd which can knows how to strike a balance between studies and fun. Boy-girl ratio, like most engineering colleges, is really poor; approximately 1:6.
